Printable pre-inspection checklist

Work through this list before the inspector arrives. It consolidates the same fail points covered by our online pool inspection self-check and certificate checker tools, laid out as a one-page checklist you can print or save as a PDF.

Last reviewed July 2026. Based on requirements referenced by the NSW Swimming Pool Register and the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC), and the barrier standard AS1926.1. This is a self-check, not a substitute for a licensed inspection.

Gate and latch

Gate closes and self-latches every time, without being propped open or needing a push.

The single most common reason pools fail. Check hinge tension and the latch mechanism; often a DIY adjustment or a replacement self-closing hinge.

Latch sits at least 1.5m above ground, on the pool side, out of reach from outside the fence.

Reposition or replace the latch. Usually a straightforward DIY hardware swap.

Fence and barrier

Fence or barrier is at least 1200mm (1.2m) high all the way around, measured from outside ground level.

Raising a fence, especially a shared boundary fence, is usually a job for a licensed fencing contractor.

Gaps between palings or vertical bars are 100mm or less, all the way around, including where soil has washed away at the bottom.

Small gaps can sometimes be closed with an added batten or mesh infill. Wider or structural gaps usually need a fencer.

Horizontal or diagonal rails, if any, are spaced at least 900mm apart so they cannot be used as a foothold.

Adding infill mesh or slats between rails can close the gap, DIY or fencer depending on the fence material.

Non-climbable zone

Pot plants, outdoor furniture, garden beds, the pump or filter, and tree branches are kept at least 900mm clear of the fence, outside.

Move items back or trim overgrown planting. Fully DIY and free.

Signage and access

A durable, legible CPR sign is displayed prominently near the pool.

Buy a compliant CPR sign from a hardware or pool shop and mount it clearly visible near the pool. Fully DIY.

Any door or window opening directly into the pool area has a compliant barrier, such as a self-closing, self-latching screen door.

Rules for direct-access doors and windows differ between NSW and QLD, so check your state guide. Usually needs a compliant screen or gate fitted by a professional.

Before you book

Pool is registered on the NSW Swimming Pool Register (NSW only).

Free and done online. Do this before you book an inspection, the certificate cannot be used at settlement without it.

The certifier or inspector you plan to book is currently accredited.

Check the NSW Fair Trading register (NSW) or the QBCC licence search (QLD) before you book, not after.
