Pool inspection self-check

Before you book and pay for an inspection, walk around your pool and answer these 8 questions. They cover the fail reasons that come up again and again in NSW and QLD pool inspections. You will get a plain summary of what is likely to be flagged, so you can fix it first.

Last reviewed July 2026. Based on requirements referenced by the NSW Swimming Pool Register and the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC), and the barrier standard AS1926.1. This is a self-check, not a substitute for a licensed inspection.

Walk around your pool and answer each question

1. Does your pool gate close and latch by itself every time, without being propped open or needing a push?

2. Is the gate latch at least 1.5 m above ground, on the pool side, where someone outside the fence cannot reach through or over it?

3. Are pot plants, outdoor furniture, garden beds and other climbable objects kept at least 900 mm clear of the fence on the outside?

4. Are the gaps between fence palings or vertical bars 100 mm or less, all the way around?

5. Is a durable, legible CPR sign displayed in clear view near the pool?

6. If a door or window from the house opens directly into the pool area, does it have a compliant barrier (for example a self-closing, self-latching screen door)?

7. Is your pool fence or barrier at least 1200 mm high all the way around, measured from outside ground level?

8. If your fence has horizontal or diagonal rails, are they spaced at least 900 mm apart so they cannot be used as a foothold?

Inspector fees vary and are not set by QBCC; the QBCC pool safety certificate lodgement fee itself is a separate government charge of roughly $44–46. Get a few quotes.

Typical re-inspection (after a fail)

$80–$150

per re-inspection

Providers commonly charge a reduced fee for a follow-up visit once repairs are done, cheaper than a full first inspection. Confirm this with your inspector before booking.
