How to choose a pool inspector or certifier
The single most important check is accreditation. Here is how to verify it and what else to ask before booking.

Check accreditation first
Only certain people can legally issue your certificate. In NSW that is a council officer or a private certifier accredited by NSW Fair Trading (an E1 certifier). In QLD it is a pool safety inspector licensed by the QBCC. Verify the name against the relevant official register before you book, not after. Anyone can call themselves a pool safety expert, but only an accredited inspector can issue a valid certificate.
Match them to your state and pool
Accreditation is state-specific, so a Queensland inspector cannot certify a NSW pool and vice versa. If you have a shared pool in a unit block or a body corporate arrangement, confirm the inspector handles shared pools, since the rules and certificate validity differ from a standard backyard pool.
Ask the practical questions
Ask what the fee covers, whether a reinspection is included or charged separately, how quickly they can issue the certificate if you pass, and whether they can point out fixes on the day. A good inspector will happily explain a defect and what it takes to clear it.
Book early
